My name is Alexander Popichak and I’m a journalist, editor, live television director, designer and producer.
I’m currently the executive producer for Erie News Now, which is a CBS (WSEE 35) and NBC (WICU 12) affiliate serving northwestern Pennsylvania and the greater Erie, PA area. Since January 2019, I’ve led the newsroom through our 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts daily. In December of 2020, I was named executive producer and have taken on creative oversight in addition to traditional producing duties. In my time with Erie News Now, I’ve developed graphic and editorial standards that have been shared and adopted by other stations within our broadcast group. I’ve also produced several half-hour specials and breaking news events.
In 2018, I graduated cum laude with a B.A. in broadcast production and media management from Point Park University in Pittsburgh.
During my time at Point Park, I created and produced Point Park’s only student run news broadcast, NewsNight. I also served as General Manager for our on-campus radio station WPPJ and as editor-in-chief of The Globe. At WPPJ I oversaw the station’s physical move of locations at the 2018 Rock-a-Thon charity event. As editor I oversaw the 45-person staff, day-to-day operations and the 50th anniversary edition and subsequent celebration.
I was a digital associate for the Pittsburgh City Paper in 2018, a production assistant for 90.5 WESA – Pittsburgh’s NPR News Station in 2017 and I was an editorial intern for Trib Total Media’s short-lived digital project upgruv in 2016.
For my work covering the Point Park full-time faculty union formation, I was honored with a 2018 Mark of Excellence Award for breaking news reporting. That same year, I was honored with our staff for editorial writing and our weekly Globe’s Point.
My journalistic work has been published with the Point Park Globe, U-View, WPPJ, WESA, The City Paper, upgruv, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Trib Total Media’s Signal Item and IN Community Magazines. If you’re interested in my full credentials, visit the “contact/resume” page.
In addition to formal editorial roles, I also worked as a studio apprentice for Point Park University and as a high school sports stringer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
In March of 2018 I created, directed and produced Point Park University’s first-ever live sketch comedy event, Point Blank Live! Originally produced for U-View Television, it has become one of the most-watched television events since the station began in 2007 with a reach of over 1,000 people within the first week. The creative team assembled by the event has gone on to function as a comedy troupe, and I informally consulted on its sequel broadcast.
My non-journalistic work includes an anniversary calendar designed for my hometown of Carnegie, PA and building websites for the Slickville, PA centennial and my college roommate’s run for PA House.
I’m an Eagle Scout (class of 2014) and a proud Carlynton Cougar (class of 2015).
This is the part of the bio where I say something like “Alex lives in Erie with no pets because his landlord doesn’t allow them and collection of various knick-knacks from friends and family,” right?
